Some of you know that we were up at Primary Childrens Hospital for the weekend. What an experience. We started out at the insta-care first, with poor little Kaiyenna sooooo dehydrated that she looked like she was dying. Not something you want to see everyday. Or ever. The tech tried 3 times to get the IV in, but the veins in a child are really small, plus when you're dehydrated they shrink. Making them even smaller. Well after that 3 times, they sent us up to Primary Childrens. After getting there they had two more techs try and get the IV in, with no success and 5 pokes later...they say:
"We are gonna get somebody from the "IV Team" to come in and put the IV in." Well, let me tell you about the IV team. They have a special light that makes the skin look translucent, so you can see the veins. The Tech got it in on the first try and didn't have to feel for the vein when it rolled. Now, it might, just MIGHT be me, but wouldn't you think that if you already know that a childs veins are small and they shrink when you're dehydrated, that you could skip all the pain and horror by using the light in the first place? Ding ding ding. What do we have for her Johnny?
My poor girl was so thirsty that she guzzled down a juice box size of gatorade, and ate a whole popsicle but threw it up. And after that she wouldn't drink anything, maybe it was because she was associating. We tried everything, but she wouldn't take anything. Her temperature wanted to stay at 102. They didn't want us to go home until Kaiya drank something. This afternoon, her temp finally dropped and they thought that maybe if she was home and not reminded of the hospital, she would drink something, so they let us come home. YEAH! Well after getting home, we tried to give her some powerade & popsicles, but no dice. we tried and tried, fearing that we would have to go back. We gave her a few fishy crackers hoping to make her thirsty. She ate them. But after about a half hour she threw up. So after waiting 20 mins we tried more powerade. But she didn't want any. Finally we tried water. She loved the water, and even more than that, she felt like a big girl holding the water bottle all by her self. We fixed mac & cheese for dinner, and she wanted some. She was hungry. After eating that, we were sure she would want some powerade. But she still refused. I'm convinced that she was associated that powerade with her throwing up, because that was the last thing she had the last time she threw up. Also, she wont even drink from a sippie any more. Not even a cup. It has to be a water bottle. Oh, we even tried to put the white powerade in a water bottle. She saw it was cloudier than the water, so she wouldn't drink it. We also put clear pedialyte in a water bottle... looks like water. We tricked her with that one, which is good because she starting to get more diarrhea and she needs the electrolytes. Water doesn't have any. Kaiyenna is doing tons better. She's been sleeping since 9:45 pm and she didn't throw up the mac and cheese. She is still worn out though. But we will see how she is tomorrow!
